Press Release
Department of Tourism penalizes the tourism service providers
As per the new tourism system, it is a mandatory requirement for
the certified tourism service providers to be validated by the
Department of Tourism (DoT) to provide services to tourists. This
measure was taken to validate the readiness of tourism service
providers in preparation for reopening of tourism on 23rd
September 2022. Towards this end, DoT has carried out the
validation of tourist hotels and homestays across the country. As of
November 2022, 174 tourist hotels and 105 homestays across the
country have been validated and approved for hosting tourists.
The Department in collaboration with the Department of Revenue
and Customs (DRC), Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory
Authority (BAFRA), and Regional Offices of Economic Affairs
(RoEAs) conducted a random monitoring in Phuentsholing, Paro
and Thimphu from 25" October to 4'* November 2022. During the
monitoring, it was found that 9 non-validated/non-certified hotels
have provided services to tourists in contravention of the new
tourism system. Similarly, 15 tour companies were found to have
used the services of such accommodation providers. The
Department initiated collection of fines from the defaulters as per
the Tourism Rules and Regulations (TRR) 2022. Similar monitoring
will also be conducted in other places.
Therefore, the Department of Tourism would like to request for
support and cooperation from the tourism service providers in
ensuring compliance with TRR 2022 to avoid paying penalties.
